The Colorado Experiment: what a famous 28-day transformation can—and cannot—teach FAST.

A spectacular rebuilding story is useful only when its starting condition, measurement method, competing explanations, and commercial context stay visible.

THE SHORT VERSION

A dramatic rebuild—not a clean test of one training method.

In May 1973, Arthur Jones supervised an intensive 28-day strength-training demonstration involving Casey Viator, a 21-year-old former Mr. America who had previously carried far more muscle than he did at the start. The original report described brief, extremely demanding workouts using Jones-designed resistance machines and reported an extraordinary change in bodyweight and body composition.

The story became famous as proof of rapid muscle gain. The more careful interpretation is narrower: an unusually gifted, previously elite bodybuilder rapidly regained lost size while retraining and eating abundantly. That is interesting—but prior training, pre-study depletion, measurement assumptions, diet, genetics, and the equipment inventor's commercial interest all complicate cause and effect.

WHAT THE 1973 REPORT CLAIMED

Read the numbers—and the arithmetic behind the headline.

The report estimated body composition with total-body potassium measurement. That can estimate fat-free or body-cell mass; it does not directly weigh newly synthesized skeletal muscle.

The report added scale-weight gain to estimated fat loss. This was an inferred fat-free-mass change—not a direct measurement of 63.21 pounds of new skeletal muscle.

WHAT HAPPENED BEFORE DAY ONE

The starting condition was part of the result.

Viator was not an untrained beginner. He had won the 1971 AAU Mr. America title and had previously weighed about 218 pounds in highly muscular condition. The original account says an industrial finger injury, a severe reaction to an antitetanus injection, reduced food intake, and roughly four months without training preceded the demonstration. Later recollections also describe deliberate dieting before the start.

That history matters. The experiment did not observe an ordinary person creating 63 pounds of brand-new muscle from a stable baseline. It observed a previously elite bodybuilder rebuilding from a state far below his former size. The original report itself acknowledged that both Viator and Jones were rebuilding muscular mass they had carried before.

TRAINING AND FOOD

Hard training, abundant intake, and several contraction styles.

The sessions were brief but extremely demanding, typically using a single work set per exercise taken to momentary failure. The program included normal repetitions, negative-accentuated work, and negative-only work. It was not simply an eccentric-only protocol.

The original report described a reasonably balanced diet and no special supplement program. Viator later recalled eating approximately 5,000 calories, six to eight meals, and roughly 400 grams of protein per day. Those later figures are retrospective self-report—not a controlled dietary record—and should not be confused with a verified protocol.

THE MUSCLE-MEMORY PROBLEM

Regaining is not the same biological question as building for the first time.

Modern human research supports the idea that prior training can leave persistent molecular signatures and that retraining can produce a different response than first-time training. Motor familiarity, retained cellular adaptations, prior skill, and an already demonstrated capacity for muscular size all make rapid regain plausible without proving that one machine, repetition style, or commercial training system caused the entire change.

The historical comparison is useful as a design warning, not as precedent that FAST will work.

FOUNDER PRE-PROTOCOL CONTEXT

An intentional weight-gain period is a confounder—not yet a study phase.

The Art of Survival founder reports starting from a substantially leaner condition—roughly sub-15% body fat by his own estimate—then intentionally gaining bodyweight through poor-quality, highly processed food choices in anticipation of the proposed FAST concept. That history creates a visual and metabolic contrast, but it is not a standardized measurement, an approved run-in, or evidence that the intervention will work.

A qualified investigator may require weight stabilization, standardized baseline testing, medical screening, or a completely different starting condition. The founder's preparation cannot substitute for protocol ownership, and an institution may treat the deliberate gain as a confounder that weakens rather than strengthens interpretation.

Spectacle attracts attention. Controls create knowledge.

Document the baseline

Prior training, intentional weight change, diet history, body composition, and measurement method must be dated and disclosed.

Separate regain from preservation

Muscle memory and reconditioning answer a different question from preserving function during scarcity.

Measure more than appearance

Strength, cognition, biomarkers, adherence, symptoms, recovery, and adverse events matter alongside lean-mass estimates.

Report the failure case

If performance declines, safety markers deteriorate, or the amino-acid strategy fails, that result belongs in the record.
