Test martial-arts proficiency under changing pressure conditions.
This proposed experiment organizes fifty clearly defined martial-arts bout types into a progressive testing system. It changes opponents, starting position, space, training-weapon cue, fatigue, sensory load, tactical responsibility, and the amount of information the participant must process. The purpose is to identify which skills remain effective, which decisions deteriorate, and how quickly performance recovers.
WHAT THE EXPERIMENT MEASURES
A fighter can complete a bout while still becoming slower, less accurate, less aware, or easier to overwhelm.
Each test records observable performance: recognition time, defensive reactions, accuracy, balance, footwork, positioning, effective counters, mistakes, work rate, use of space, technical consistency, and recovery. Repeating the same test makes changes across training or nutritional conditions easier to compare.
Recognize
Did the participant notice the correct cue and distinguish a relevant change from a harmless one?
Choose
Was the response appropriate to the scripted problem, including the decision not to engage when an exit was available?
Execute
Did movement remain accurate, balanced, controlled, and consistent with the declared task?
Recover
How quickly did heart rate, symptoms, decision accuracy, and technical consistency return toward baseline?
LONGITUDINAL DESIGN CONCEPT
Compare the same person with the same task across time.
First, conduct familiarization so learning the test is not mistaken for improvement. Next, establish more than one rested and adequately nourished baseline. If a qualified institution later approves an intervention, repeat only a short prespecified subset at defined checkpoints, then again during recovery and after refeeding.
Equipment, role-player scripts, coaching exposure, task order, time of day, hydration controls, assessor, and scoring should remain fixed wherever possible. Medical stopping authority overrides every performance goal.

The experiment begins with one padded opponent and familiar conditions. 01 · One-on-one padded boutEstablish an individual performance baseline
One participant faces one fully padded role player for a consistent round. Measure recognition, defense, counters, footwork, positional control, work rate, technical errors, and recovery.
02 · Two-opponent boutManage two threats without becoming surrounded
Two padded opponents enter together or in a declared sequence. Test scanning, movement, stacking one opponent behind the other, and using position to prevent both from attacking freely.
03 · Rotating gauntletFace a fresh opponent at each timed interval
A new padded opponent replaces the previous one at fixed intervals. Track when accuracy, decision-making, defense, footwork, or technical form begins to deteriorate.
04 · Crowd-navigation boutIdentify danger while moving through people
The participant crosses a populated training space containing neutral role players and one or more designated opponents. Test awareness, route selection, movement without fixation, and timely disengagement.
Walls, seats, the floor, and close-range entanglement
Real encounters rarely begin from a comfortable stance. These bouts test orientation, balance, technical access, and escape from increasingly disadvantageous starting positions.
05 · Wall or corner startRecover usable position when space is limited
Begin near a wall or corner while a padded opponent controls the open space. Test the first movement, angle creation, balance, guard, and the ability to regain mobility.
06 · Seated startRespond from a chair without surrendering balance
The participant begins seated while the opponent approaches on a consistent cue. Measure orientation, protection, standing mechanics, use of the chair as an obstacle, and access to an escape route.
07 · Ground-recovery boutProtect, create space, stand, and reorient
Begin on a padded floor with one standing role player. Test defensive structure, distance creation, technical standing, awareness during the transition, and return to mobility.
08 · Clinch and positional-release boutWork from contact instead of preferred striking range
Begin from a standardized body-control position. Test posture, hand fighting, balance, frames, position improvement, release, and immediate awareness after separation.
Knife-, pistol-, bat-, and mixed-object cues
Brightly colored inert props make the problem visible: recognize the threat profile, manage distance and angles, choose an appropriate response, control what must be controlled, and create an exit.

A padded role player uses a flexible orange or pink knife-shaped prop in a declared attack pattern. Test recognition, footwork, protection, limb control, countering, disengagement, and recovery of awareness.

A padded role player presents a brightly colored nonfunctional pistol-shaped prop from standardized positions. Test judgment, line-of-fire awareness, movement, timing, control, escape, and post-action scanning.

A padded opponent uses a soft colored bat-shaped prop in declared attack patterns. Test entry versus disengagement decisions, protection, angle changes, use of obstacles, control, and escape.
12 · Mixed-threat identification boutDistinguish empty hands, ordinary objects, and training weapons
Randomized role-player presentations force the participant to identify the actual problem before acting. Measure false reactions, delayed recognition, proportional choice, and transition speed.
Barriers, exits, partners, and people who need help
These bouts test whether martial skill can be integrated with movement through a real environment, communication, protection of another person, and an actual route to safety.
13 · Barrier-and-exit boutUse the environment to buy time and improve position
Furniture, doorways, walls, and marked exits create a changing movement problem. Test barrier use, route choice, obstacle management, awareness, and the transition from defense to escape.
14 · Partner protection and movementMove another person while staying able to act
The participant must communicate with a cooperative partner, keep that person moving, preserve awareness of the opponent, and reach a designated exit without losing control of the situation.
15 · Pre- and post-exertion boutMeasure technical quality before and after physical work
Repeat the same standardized bout before and after a consistent conditioning task. Compare reaction, accuracy, balance, tactical choice, work rate, technical form, and recovery.
16 · Dual-task boutFight for position while retaining information
Add a neutral memory, recognition, or communication task to a familiar bout. Measure whether divided attention degrades movement, judgment, recall, or opponent awareness.
17 · Delayed-retention boutTest whether newly learned skill can be recalled later
Teach a bounded technical sequence, then retest it after a fixed delay. Score omissions, order errors, timing, coaching dependence, and adaptation when the role player changes the presentation.
18 · Recovery retestTrack the return toward the participant's own baseline
Repeat selected movement and decision tests at fixed recovery intervals. Record when timing, accuracy, balance, symptoms, heart rate, and technical consistency return toward baseline.
Numbers, timing, size, and skill change
These bouts isolate what happens when opponents arrive in different numbers, at different times, with different physical characteristics, or with different levels of training.
19 · One-versus-three stacking boutKeep three opponents from working at once
Three padded role players pressure the participant from controlled starting positions. Test continuous movement, stacking, use of obstacles, target selection, and resistance to tunnel vision.
20 · Uneven-skill oppositionAdapt when one opponent is more capable than another
Role players use clearly assigned skill levels. Test whether the participant identifies the more consequential opponent, avoids predictable exchanges, and changes tactics as the matchup changes.
21 · Unknown-opponent-count boutPreserve awareness when the total number is not announced
The participant knows the scenario window but not whether one, two, or three padded role players will enter. Measure scanning, positioning, premature commitment, and response to new information.
22 · Delayed second-opponent entryInterrupt tunnel vision after the first engagement begins
A second padded role player enters on a fixed but undisclosed timer. Test whether the participant continues scanning, hears cues, breaks fixation, and repositions before being trapped.

One role player exits and a fresh role player enters without resetting the round. Track transition awareness, tactical adaptation, accumulated fatigue, and repeated technical quality.
24 · Mixed-size opponent progressionAdjust range and leverage across different bodies
Role players of different height, reach, weight, and movement style appear in a declared progression. Measure whether distance, timing, stance, grips, and technique selection change appropriately.
25 · Southpaw/orthodox adaptationRecognize and adjust to opposite-sided stance
The role player changes stance between rounds. Test lead-side recognition, angle choice, defensive positioning, preferred combinations, and the speed of tactical adjustment.

Use safe partial obstruction, controlled low light, or visual clutter while preserving a visible training lane. Measure orientation, scanning, balance, cue recognition, and reliance on touch or sound.
27 · Noise-and-command boutSeparate useful information from auditory overload
Recorded noise, alarms, and conflicting neutral commands accompany a familiar bout. Test communication, cue discrimination, attention control, and decision-making under sound pressure.
28 · Occupied-hand startRespond while carrying ordinary objects
Begin with a bag, coat, phone, package, or other inert object in one or both hands. Test release versus retention decisions, protection, balance, access to technique, and movement toward safety.
29 · Clothing-restriction boutTest movement in realistic clothing
Repeat a familiar bout while wearing representative outerwear, footwear, or a securely fitted bag. Measure lost range, snagging, slower access, altered footing, and tactical adaptation.

Stairs, corridors, vehicles, balance disruption, and limited space
These bouts change geometry and footing so the participant must adapt stance, movement, balance, and escape choices instead of relying on open-mat habits.
33 · Stairway and elevation boutManage changes in height and footing
Use a purpose-built padded step platform or approved stair mock-up. Test balance, hand support, line of movement, opponent positioning, and route selection across different elevations.
34 · Narrow-corridor boutWork when lateral movement is restricted
Temporary padded walls create a narrow lane. Test stance changes, distance, use of the corridor, protection, forward-versus-reverse movement, and escape through limited openings.
35 · Vehicle-adjacent boutMove around doors, seats, and confined angles
A padded vehicle mock-up creates seated, doorway, and exterior positioning problems. Test orientation, entanglement avoidance, use of structure, exit choice, and transition to open space.

The participant manages a cooperative child-sized dummy or adult partner while tracking a padded role player. Test positioning, communication, shielding choices, mobility, and exit completion.
39 · Fallen-partner extractionPull a downed partner clear of a chaotic crowd
A partner lies inside a simulated melee while nearby participants remain occupied with one another. The rescuer secures one wrist with both hands, drags the partner toward an open safe zone, and keeps scanning so neither person is trampled as the surrounding action moves.
40 · Verbal-to-physical transitionRecognize when language is no longer controlling the encounter
A scripted role player applies verbal pressure, boundary testing, and closing distance before a declared physical cue. Measure verbal posture, positioning, recognition, transition speed, and decisive movement.
41 · False-resolution boutMaintain awareness after the apparent problem ends
The role player initially disengages, then re-enters on a standardized cue. Test whether the participant prematurely relaxes, loses distance, turns away, or fails to continue scanning and moving.

50 · Verbal pressure, feinting, and civilian multi-hazard boutUse mental jiu-jitsu while preserving readiness to act
A scripted aggressive role player applies social pressure, interruptions, closing distance, and distraction while the participant practices boundary language, phone-call feints that imply an observing ally, apparent cooperation or supplication as a tactical feint, movement toward an exit, and immediate transition to effective defense when the opening appears. Later versions add a second role player, occupied hands, noise, or a person who needs assistance.
HOW THE PROGRESSION BUILDS
Learn the test with one opponent, then increase the number of problems the participant must solve.
A participant first learns the movement and scoring system in a simple setting. Later versions add a second opponent, a fresh opponent entering on a timer, a confined starting position, a colored training weapon, fatigue, or a second task. Increasing one variable at a time shows exactly which type of pressure causes performance to change.
DOUBLE-BLACK EXTREME USE CASE · THEORETICAL RESEARCH QUESTIONS
Do chemical irritants or conducted-energy devices actually stop a highly motivated person who is still pursuing an objective?
Feeling an exposure while standing still is not the same question as testing whether it interrupts purposeful forward movement, pursuit, control of an object, escape, or another time-sensitive objective. That difference is the proposed subject of this advanced research lane.
Questions the proposed research would examine
- Whether an exposure stops, slows, redirects, or fails to interrupt a motivated participant.
- How vision, orientation, balance, coordination, decision-making, communication, and task completion change.
- Whether an escaping participant can keep moving while another person attempts to deploy the test device.

HOW THIS CONNECTS TO FAST
Repeat selected martial-arts tests before, during, and after the nutritional experiment.
First establish the participant’s normal performance while rested and ordinarily nourished. During the FAST experiment, repeat a smaller set of the same tests at scheduled checkpoints. Compare the participant against their own baseline to identify changes in awareness, reaction, accuracy, balance, work rate, technical consistency, judgment, and recovery.
CROSS-LANE CONNECTION
FAST supplies the longitudinal research question. Martial arts supplies the skill and measurement context.
